It had a lot to live up to as a musical sequel following its predecessor’s long and famed run. But just over a year after Love Never Dies opened at the Adelphi Theatre, the final curtain will fall the end of August.

The Lord Lloyd-Webber Really Useful Theatre Group announcement came following mixed critical reviews to the first musical sequel to ever open in the West End and a recent admission by the 63 year old that he was “not with it” when the show premiered in March of 2010. A series of negative reviews were provoked by the production with a critic labeling it Paint Never Dries.

His show was rewritten and premiered November 2010 with a better narrative. The new version received a better reception than the original and was seen as an improvement. But despite receiving nominations for seven Olivier awards the production has not be able to shake off a bad stigma from the original opening and will be replaced by a comedy One Man, Two Guvnors at the Adelphi Theatre.

In contrast the Phantom of the Opera is celebrating its 25th year originally opening in October 1986. Earlier in the year Lloyd Webber revealed that illness prevented him from overseeing the Love Never Dies initial opening. The producer and writer admitted that the first regrettably should have been postponed until after he was well enough to give his 100% efforts.

A fresh production opened to positive reviews in Australia of the musical and is expected to be taken to Broadway. He said it is impossible to improve upon the Australian version it is fabulous and now they know what he was trying to get at with the original last December

After “Love Never Dies,” the sequel to “Phantom of the Opera” died at the box office and on stage earlier this year; Andrew Lloyd Webber decided he had no choice but to revamp the entire production. Insiders say that Webber felt from the start that the production was incomplete and, unfortunately for him, critics and patrons agreed.

The first production of “Love Never Dies” was reported to be so dull that viewers suggested it be renamed, “Paint Never Dries.” The stars, who it was reported sang beautifully together, have now gone through weeks of retraining with the new version.

Jack O’Brien, the director, was replaced by Bill Kenwright, a long-time friend of Webber’s. The original lyricist from “Phantom of the Opera” has reworked the songs so that they are more discernible to the audience and Bill Deamer, choreographer, was assigned to bring more energy to the performances.

Andrew Lloyd Webber himself and Ben Elton rewrote the script over the course of six arduous weeks.

The result, most say, is a production that lives up to what it should be. So far, attendees of the new show have praised it highly and are recommending it to one and all.

The show will have a gala reopening and perhaps some of the stars like Gerard Butler and Michael Caine shall be invited back to see Andrew Lloyd Webber rise from the ashes of the first production.

Friends and business associates say that he was deeply troubled with the results of the initial production and ashamed that so many people had put their trust in it being a success, only to sit in the audience and face a flop.

Many productions, beginning in Australia, of “Love Never Dies” are to run all over the globe. The production in Australia and all other productions, it has been announced, are being revamped to match the new original.

“The Phantom of the Opera” is moving to Coney Island via the Adelphi Theatre in the West End. “Love Never Dies” takes up the Phantom’s story ten years after his disappearance from Paris at the end of the original show.

In development since 1997, “Love Never Dies” is set to open in London on March 9, 2010.

Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the score, as he did for the Phantom; it remains to be seen whether he has matched his huge success with “Phantom”, which is still running in London after 24 years, and the longest-running show in the history of Broadway.

Canadian actor Ramin Karimloo, who also performed as the Phantom for two years in the West End, plays the title role. Sierra Boggess is Christine; she also played that role in the Las Vegas Spectacular premier of “The Phantom” in 2007, and starred in “The Little Mermaid” on Broadway.

“Love Never Dies” is directed by American Jack O’Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell; both are currently doing their respective jobs on the set of “Hairspray” in the West End. Bob Crowley, winner of five Tony Awards, designed the sets and costumes; a challenging task of creating the Phantom’s eerie but beautiful setting with a roller coaster instead of a chandelier as a prop.

Anticipation and expectations are high, and a lot of talent has gone into this ambitious sequel. The creators and producers of the show are hoping that “Love Never Dies” will captivate audiences as “The Phantom” has, and the words of the title are really true.
