Jude Law returns to West end

Jude Law is set to star in ‘Anna Christie’ at the Donmar Warehouse from August to October as part of a season to mark the farewell of Michael Grandage who he confirmed he would be stepping down as Artistic Director of the Donmar last October. Law, the recent star of the film ‘Sherlock Holmes’, was critically acclaimed for his role of “Hamlet” in William Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ under the direction of Grandage in 2009 and will play the part of Mat Burke, a lovelorn sailor who falls for an ex-prostitute played by Ruth Wilson, in writer Eugene O’Neill’s play.

Other plays in the farewell season include ‘Inadmissible Evidence’ by John Osborne, which sees Douglas Hodge taking the lead role playing a lawyer in the grip of a mid life crisis, and Shakespeare’s ‘Richard II’, which will be directed by Michael Grandage himself, and will feature Eddie Redmayne in the lead role.

Grandage, who began at the Donmar in 2002, is said to be both “emotional and excited” at the prospect of working on his final season as Artistic Director. Over the past nine years his work played out across four continents, winning over 80 important awards including Tonys, and Evening Standard awards amongst much other recognition.

Brits receive many Tony nominations

Two small theatres in London, the Donmar Warehouse and the Menier Chocolate Factory, received a big boost when they led the nominations for the Tony theatre awards, which were announced this week.

La Cage aux Folles from Terry Johnson leads the list of top nominations along with Fela!, with 11 nominations crowning a life that began at the Southwark Chocolate Factory before hitting the West End. Included in La Cage aux Folles nods are nominations for Zaza/Albin and Kelsey Grammar in the role Georges.

Following close behind, winning acclaim for the Southwark theatre where it started out, was A Little Night Music from Stephen Sondheim, which received four nods including one each for Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury.

Producer of La Cage aux Folles, Sonia Friedman, said that the success of the play at the Chocolate Factory prompting it to continue on to Broadway and the West End is due to the vision of the play’s artistic director David Babani because of the way he used the set to tell the story.

Friedman continued to say that it was a gamble, but she is thrilled that the play received such high accolades, and is thrilled for everyone involved.

Also worth mentioning is the Donmar Warehouse Red production, which received seven nominations.

The most interesting category to watch however may be the best acting category, which this year will include Jude Law, Denzel Washington, Alfred Molina, Liv Schreiber, and Christopher Walken. For the best actress category, the Americans stole the nominee list, which includes Laura Linney, Valerie Harper, Viola Davis, Jan Maxwell, and Linda Lavin.

The Tony award ceremony will take place on June 13^th, with another Brit, Alan Ayckbourn receiving the lifetime achievement award and David Hyde Pierce taking home an award to honour his work with charities for Alzheimer’s.
